MLS: Fair & Balanced?

When the season started, there was a lot of talk about how this season would provide the first ‘balanced’ schedule and the closest we’ll get to a true Supporters Shield winner. Champions of the ‘we need to be like Europe’ philosophy jumped all over this opportunity.

WooHoo!!! The long anticipated CONCACAF Champions League has finally been announced.
I won’t bore  you with the details cuz it’s blogged and published everywhere else.
Honestly, I’m not sure if I’m excited or not about this. Yeah, it’s another opportunity for MLS Clubs to show how competitive they are. Yes, another. Is the SuperLiga still part of the mix? Houston and NE still have the Champions Cup (the old version to play this Spring as well. Another question, which two MLS Clubs get the …

Sorry I missed this the other day.
DC United is still MLS’ best - Washington Times
Fair enough, the Supporters Shield the better judge of who was best over the entire season…but MLS recognizes the MLS Cup winner as Champion so, nice try DC.

Say what you want about the playoffs, it’s format and anything else you feel like complaining about.  I’m not buying any of it right now.  From a neutral standpoint, that was a highly entertaining match and well worth the complaining I got from my wife who wanted to watch Survivor.  Gimme DC and Chicago in a playoff second leg any day.  Great DC crowd too.  Love it.  Who needs Beckham to sell tickets?  Games like last nights should be doing the selling.

The stadium looked good. Undersoil heating? That’s not exactly a new concept. They’ve used it in England (and probably other places in Europe) for years. I enjoyed the game…but about 5 minutes after Kickoff, I had to mute the TV because, 1) my son was taking a nap and I didn’t want him to wake and 2) I just could not stand listening to the drivel O’Brien and Foudy were spouting. Any chance they could just forget about commentators and leave us with just the …

I don’t think I can remember an off season quite as busy as this one for Soccer in this country. It’s about time MLS kept the news flow going during the winter months.
So, I’m now getting used to the fact that Bob Bradley is the new national team coach. I’ve had a few days to reflect on the hiring and I’ve decided it’s not the end of the world. I’m sure he’ll do a great job. But the thing is, he’s not the guy who is …

…and it seems DC has Jim “Soni” Sonefeld. Who, you ask? He’s the drummer for that bad Hootie and the Blowfish. Remember them? Yeah, they had that one song..how does it go?
Anyway, the have a new album coming out–didn’t even know they were still going–and the Washington Post interviewed Soni and talked about the boys in Black and Red.
How he become a fan sounds reasonable enough.
I still have pain stemming from the demise of the NASL, the North American Soccer League, because that was my dream, that was to be …

I’ve no idea how much AEG paid when they bought DC United. However, selling the team for $26 Million must have created a nice return for Anchutz. If I remember correctly, franchises were bought for $5 Million back in 1996. While owners have lost money over the years, it seems the value of the franchises has gone up a lot over the last 10 years.

As if playing Chelsea tonight in a friendly isn’t enough….the even Empire (AEG) is announcing the sale of the team to local investors.
Now, anyone who reads my blog on a regular basis knowns I’m not the biggest fan of AEG–or at least the way they do things in LA–so I can only see this move as a positive for the fans in DC. Looks like they’ll be getting a new stadium as well, though I’m not holding my breath until it’s official. Hope it’s a good match tonight and congrats …
