It’s a Funny Ol’ Game…

I have to laugh sometimes at how people jump from one extreme to another. We seem to have become a bi-polar society or something—not that I’m an expert on the topic or anything. The American soccer fan is a prime example of this.

Pride for Africa, Gold for Spain

Is it just me or did the World Cup seem to last a lot longer when I was a kid? Argentina, Spain, and Mexico those World Cups all seemed to last half the summer. The entire summer seemed to revolve around them. This year it just blew by.

World Cup Scorecard after the Group Stage

There have been plenty of stories so far but I wanted to quickly breakdown the winners and losers among the teams who have gone home already and the different confederations.

Calm down US Soccer fans

I don’t know if it’s just soccer fans or Americans in general these days but, well, these knee jerk hysterics depending on the latest result has got to end. Sorry but, yeah losing at the Azteca was a disappointment. But ya know what? We’ve never won there. Not once.

US Soccer fans are never happy

Seriously, you’d have thought we had just lost at home to Granada (no offense to the Grenadians) or something, anything, other than stuffing Trinidad and Tobago 3-0. Hey, at least we aren’t Mexico.

Is CONCACAF getting tougher?

I’ve been mulling over Saturday nights El Salvador - USA match for a few days now.  I’ve read more than a couple of the knee jerk “the sky is falling” blog posts from US fans about the performance.  However, those comments just haven’t sat will with me.  I don’t think it was all that awful a performance.  No, it wasn’t great but, the sky isn’t falling either.

…or at least my blog?
Seriously, his column in today’s LA Times looks like they were lifted straight from the numerous rants on BigSoccer. Of course, he put his thoughts together much better.

Things would be far more interesting if FIFA showed some initiative and forced CONCACAF and CONMEBOL, the South American confederation, to combine into a single, 48-nation confederation.
The Gold Cup could then disappear and the Copa America could become the regional championship — an honest-to-goodness Cup of the Americas.
With the likes of Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico and …

Did anyone see the US-Cuba match last night? Nope, me either. Ya see, CONCACAF, in it’s wisdom decided to sell the rights to the Gold Cup (North America’s biggest competition) to a Spanish Language network. I have no idea if I get this Teleflora (something like that) Channel or not…and to be honest, I don’t care.
Seriously, why should I bother? As an English speaking person living in the US, it’s difficult enough to follow the sport of soccer and in order to do so, you have to spend a lot …

What a mess. How silly can a governing body be? (no comments from Democrats out there…yes, I mean you Kyle)
Anyway, how the heck can Barbados allow itself to get booted from FIFA? Ya gotta be silly to let it get that far. Of course, I guess there are some parallels to the 2000 US Presidential Election. Guess it’s a good thing the UN didn’t boot the US out. Or is it?
Either way, this feud between the two candidates can’t be a good thing. …
