Wind ‘em up and see what happens

18 May 2010 No Comment

1950I’ve been having a lot of fun–maybe too much–winding up my English friends ever since the draw in December.  To be honest, the best thing about playing in the first round of the next month is listening to their over-confidence and giving them grief on how little they really know about the sport of soccer in the US.

To be honest, they will have a much deeper squad than us, but that doesn’t mean that 3 points for is automatic.  Beating won’t be easy, but it can happen.  If I were living in a country where I could legally place a bet on the match, I’d go for a draw….but where’s the fun in saying it’s gonna gonna be a draw?

Anyway, today I read that Jozy Altidore speaks my language and is having fun winding up the English as well. Good for him.  A 3-0 prediction makes it even better than just, “we’re gonna beat you”.  Best of all, the British Tabloids are gonna have a field day with the comments.  While everyone knows his comments were in jest, they’ll sell more papers if they make it sound like he was serious so I’m looking forward to reading The Sun (potential NSFW content) tomorrow.

When it all comes down to it though, it’s the opening match for both teams, they are both favored to move out of the group stage so the result won’t make or break things for both teams.  But 3 points in this one will make the other two group matches less critical.

One other thing, Jozy is of Haitian desent.  Remember the last time the US faced England in the World Cup finals with a Haitian striker?  This time, a victory over won’t be as huge as that one though.

June 12th can’t get here soon enough.  I’m sticking with my 1-0 to the US prediction.
