Who can we blame?

ruledout_1661525cFor the next six days until the game against Algeria, US fans are going to be complaining about several calls Koman Coulibaly made in the game against Slovenia this afternoon. One part of me is in total agreement that we should be complaining about being screwed by some poor calls. However, I keep coming back to the thought that had we not been 2-0 down at half time, Coulibaly would not have had the opportunity to affect the result with poor results.

Now, in no way am I defending him. The fact that right after he blew the whistle to disallow Edu’s goal, he wasn’t able to explain who committed the foul should tell you something. You can see ’s frustration here.

On top of that, Coulibaly called for 3 minutes of injury time, however, a Slovenian player was rolling on the ground apparently injured for most of it and after his was stretchered off, the ref blew time. It was a strange way to finish the match and I have to think he just wanted to get out of the stadium.

But the fact remains, by giving up the early goal….and then a second before the break is what lead us to the situation. Had we not put ourselves in the position where we had to come from two goals down, none of this would have mattered.

But what positives can we take from the match; we came back from two goals down against what seems to be a decent team. We came back from an unfortunate early goal on Saturday as well. Just think how we’ll we’d be doing if we didn’t keep giving away those soft goals early?

So now we in a difficult position of having to rely on other results going out way in order to get through to the next stage. But it won’t be the first time. We needed help from Korea beating Portugal in 2002; we needed help from Columbia beating Romania in 1994. So, it’s not beyond the realm of possibility for something good to happen.

Something like, only managing a draw against Algeria perhaps? Wow, that was a big help. At least we aren’t the train wreck the squad have become. Basically, all four teams in the group just have to win on Wednesday to move on.
