Happy Ending in TV for US at Azteca debate
Don’t you love a happy ending? Here we were (well, I was) all worked up about potentially not being able to watch the US play their World Cup Qualifier at the Azteca. I’d even called DirecTV to see what it would cost to get one (or both) of the channels just for the day–actually, I still haven’t heard back yet on my last email. Oh well.
Anyway, in case you can and haven’t heard yet, Telemundo and mun2 are being offered to all providers for free than day. Why not? This way they’ll potentially reach a whole new market–after all, why just stick with targeting Latino Teens?
Seriously though, regardless if anyone turning in to mun2 for the first time or not ever comes back, this could be huge for Telemundo to hold the rights. I’m sure they have advertisers bidding for time. Even with the 3PM Eastern kick off, there will be plenty of people with Doctors appointments that day.
When was the last time a match this size had all the rights (both Spanish and English) owned by a single broadcaster? Heck, we don’t have to go back that far to find when the English language rights weren’t even sold.
Anyway, I’m looking forward to the match. Knowing that Phil Schoen is doing the commentary (with Marcelo Balboa) make it even better.
Oh, and I got a visitor to my site yesterday who send me a message.
(This is a big deal cuz I blog for my own amusement and when I check the traffic stats I realize it’s a good think I don’t do this for a living!)
Dear Eric,
We read your post “A step back for soccer in the US?” and thank you, in advance, for the opportunity to respond to your concerns… with a short video:
We’ve also just published some very exciting news about the game – who are the announcers? will I need a special cable package? – and encourage you to check it out.
But, most of all, we want to hear back from you. Did we answer your questions about mun2? About this game? How can we ensure that you, our audience, enjoy this important event as much as possible?
Please let us know.
So, there you have it. (yeah, it was simply to drive traffic to their site–he could have easily answer the questions he teased me with…what are ya gonna do?) Well, you can start by calling your cable/Satellite provider and finding out the channel mun2 will be on and watch as the US comes away from the Azteca with a point for the first time since Steve Sampson was in charge. No more complaining. We get the match on live with a good commentary team. Who cares if it’s on a channel we’ll never watch again? They make money, we get the match. Life is good.
