The sky isn’t falling US Soccer fans
Don’t get me wrong, losing yesterday to Mexico in the final of the Gold Cup hurt. We should not ever lose a match that bad to anyone…especially not to our neighbors.
However, while the scoreboard read 5-0, it really wasn’t that much of a blowout. First, the US were probably the better team in the first half. Watching it I kept thinking we were gonna score eventually. It just seemed inevitable someone would find the net.
However, a soft penalty call changed all that. The young midfield we had out there yesterday, from my vantage point, tried too hard to level the score. Once that happened, the backline was left open far too much and…well, it was 2-0.
Even at 2-0, the US wasn’t out of it. However, pushing up to much, and lazy defending (and probably tired legs) couldn’t keep them going and….well we all know how it ended.
We can make excuses all day. We can bitch and complain all day. It happens. It was an off day from a young line-up. The fact is, this was a very inexperienced squad who did a great job. I’m over the result.
Yeah, it would have been nice if the US had beat Mexico (again) but ask yourself this. If you had to chose, which would you prefer:
- A young US squad beating a young Mexico squad 5-0 in the Final of the Gold Cup
- The best squads facing each other at the Azteca in a World Cup Qualifier and the US coming away with a 1-0 victory
I know which I’d choose. What do you think?
Anyway, we should focus on August 12th. Plus, we got some good news today about the match. Telemundo decided the best solution (and I can’t think of any negatives) is to just offer all cable and satellite companies a free preview of Telemundo and mun2 that day.
Now, they are free to sell a massive audience of both English and Spanish speakers to their sponsors. Is this the first time a match this size has been held by just one network for both languages? The kickoff time is a bit early but I’ve a feeling I won’t be the only person with a doctors appointment that afternoon.
One last thing, I saw who was doing the English commentary for the match…thought it was a great team then forgot who it was and where I saw it. Any help?
Update: Thanks to @backseatgaffer for promptly reminding me that it’s Phil Schoen and Marcelo Balboa doing the English Commentary for the match.
