The morning after the night before
Some thoughts the morning after LA Galaxy clinched their third MLS Cup:
Yes people we get it. Beckham pays a lot of bills. However, there were another 21 players on the pitch last night. The match hadn’t even kicked off and the whole “is this his last game” angle was already worn out. Ian Darke sure didn’t help matters by not going five minutes without bringing it up.
Did anyone actually test to see how that ball would look on TV before deciding to use it? I realize I’m not as young as I used be and my eyesight isn’t what it was…but I spent a great deal of time playing “spot the ball” during the match.
Of course, the camera work didn’t help matters. Was it really necessary to have the main camera pulled back so far? It really was a poor performance from the camera team.
Would someone please inform Ian Darke and the British media that we don’t give out winners medals here….the champions get rings. I heard Darke say it several times during the broadcast and have seen numerous comments in the British press.
I realize the league wants to avoid going up against NFL games. However, hasn’t MLB already figured out that playing matches well after bedtime for many younger fans on the East Coast is detrimental? C’mon Mr. Garber, for the sake of the kids (and older fans who need as much beauty sleep as possible) can we figure out a way to have an earlier kickoff for the championship game?
Yes, Beckham played a huge part in the success LA had this season….as did Donovan and Keane and the rest of the squad. However, very little has been said about how the turn around at LA started the second Bruce Arena arrived at the HDC. Becks may leave….heck, Donovan may leave…but as long as Bruce is at the helm, LA will be the team to beat in MLS.
So, five years ago LA Galaxy signed a major groundbreaking contract. The contract, I assume, is now coming to an end. What is now going to happen now? No, I’m not talking about Beckham. I’m talking about the Herbalife shirt sponsorship. Of course, I’m sure another season with Beckham in the shirt will probably have something to do with the new deal with whoever makes the best deal.
How much celebrating do you think Cristman did last night? He just seemed a step off the whole match. ESPN guys kept talking about Brad Davis being out but I think Chad Barrett was a greater loss. Yeah I know, who would have ever predicted anyone saying that. However, I think LA could have been up by at least a couple by halftime with him. Scary.
Landon wins game MVP? Okay, but I’d have gone with Keane. He looked a little tired but he sure was dangerous. At least Trappattoni didn’t play him the full 90 on Tuesday.
Then again, I wonder how much Beckham’s hamstring was bothering him? He seemed a bit off last night. He’s corners and freekicks were pretty ineffective.
Was there any point when Houston looked like they would win? I had a couple of tweets last night saying something about how, the longer the game went on the likelier the chance of Houston sneaking a goal got. But even then LA just seemed to control the match…just unable to find the net.
Drinking from the Cup….magic. Though I’m not sure about the champagne & Budweiser combination. Isn’t Miller the champagne of beers?
I wonder if MLS will adopt the NHL tradition of allowing each player to have the trophy for 24 hours? I wonder if Becks & Keane would take it to the UK with them? Or Juniniho take it to Brazil to show off? Good potential media.
Oh, and how can you not love Sean Franklin’s ‘beer goggles’?
So now we can start looking forward to the new season. With luck, only the shirt sponsor will change. If Beckham goes, I’m not sure it’ll be a huge loss as I’m guessing AEG already have someone in line to bring in. Interesting that so many in the media (especially the experts on the other side of the pond) are making a big deal about Beckham going out on top.
However, there’s still one major competition he could lead LA to. A title LA hasn’t won for over a decade. The CONCACAF Champions League…now that would be a legacy for him to leave.
But enough of the future, I’m off to order me a new t-shirt and cap.
