Some thoughts before the next round
It sure was nice of Mr. Blatter to apologize to England and Mexico for the referee blunders that went against them. Of course, there still hasn’t been anything said about the errors that cost the US a couple of goals. Then there’s been the missed handballs….But what do you do?
All this talk about video replay is kinda silly. I don’t see it happening. Even the goal cam is really not needed. Just have a couple extra linesmen (sorry, assistant refs) parked in the corners to cover the goal lines and be the eyes for the ref ahead of plays. We’ll see what happens.
All this talk about the ball is silly too. Here’s an idea, why not use the World Cup ball in the qualifiers as well? Same ball all the way though. Too logical?
In a recent survey, 8% of Russians indicated they believed their boys would be bringing the World Cup home in a couple of weeks. The problem is, Russia were knocked out in the final qualification playoffs by Slovenia and never made it to South Africa. Fear not comrades; be comforted by the fact that Italy, France and England have as much chance of winning the World Cup as your boys.
Just to have a little fun, I decided to take a look and see how well each region’s teams were doing in South Africa. I took average points per game and in the second round gave each team a point if they were level after 90 minutes.
| Region | Points per game |
| CONMEBOL | 2.20 |
| UEFA | 1.42 |
| Asia | 1.07 |
| CONCACAF | 1.00 |
| Oceana | 1.00 |
| Africa | 0.79 |
Really, there’s no surprise that our South American friends are so far ahead. The African teams were a major disappointment. The rest, Honduras kept the North American’s from being higher.
So, matches start again tomorrow. Everything is pointing to Brazil beating Argentina or Spain in the final. Can’t wait to see what happens.
