Sigi, Sigi, Sigi…oi! oi! oi!

12 December 2008 No Comment

Boy, talk about sore losers. For the record, I’ve always been a fan. Even when fans in LA wanted him gone because the style he brought to the HDC was ‘boring’, I’d remind those complaints that he does win….silverware. Yet, for whatever reason—reasons we’ll probably never really know—Sigi was let go while LA were at the top and replaced by the worst coach to be able to say he coached a team to the title.

Things have gone downhill for LA since Sigi left. However, you never really heard Sigi complain. He just smiled and said the right things. He soon ended up in Columbus. Now, you couldn’t stay that Columbus were an underachieving team because they never achieved anything (I’m sure that’ll draw some comments) playing in that erector set stadium of theirs.

It took a couple of years and the powers in charge gave him the time to build his team properly. They were rewarded for doing so. What a great season Columbus had this year and what a great team Sigi build.

So, how do you reward a coach who has managed to turn your entire franchise (or at least the playing part of it) around and win silverware to put in your empty cabinet? That’s it, offer him a low-ball contract extension. “Hey, I know! We don’t pay him much now, why give him more? It’ll only set precedence.” Yeah, I guess it would. But not the kind you were thinking.

So, Sigi did what any soon to be out of contract employee would do…he considered his options.

Honestly, I don’t know if Sigi (or his ‘people’) spoke with the good folks in Seattle or not before whatever date set in the contract allowed for or not. I realize that the folks in Columbus are crying foul. However, what is worse, Sigi for looking after his interests or Columbus for offering such a ridiculously low contract?

Good luck in Seattle Sigi. I know you don’t need it but any time you aren’t playing LA, I hope you do well. You’ve earned it.
