Remember, it’s a Team Sport
If there was ever proof needed that of any sport, soccer is the one in which a single player can’t make a huge difference. For 90 minutes (ok, 70 and the post game) we heard Bratos and co talk about David Beckham, his impact, his career and Grant Wahl’s book. The thing is, for as great a start as LA had tonight, Beckham really didn’t contribute much. Yeah, he was there wearing an uncustomary shirt sleeved jersey. He really didn’t see much of the ball though during his 70 minutes. One of the things I don’t like about watching a match on TV is that so much happens off camera. In tonight’s match, why was Beckham off camera so much? Was there an RBNY player keeping him honest and marking him out of the match? Was he half-assing it? I have no idea. Granted, we did some a handful of his touches, and a freekick knocked into the wall and a couple of corners. Beyond that, he was notice about making an awkward half-assed arm around Donovan’s shoulder after Landon scored the second. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Beckham NOT jump on a team mate who had just scored.
Here’s the thing. LA have been playing better recently. Whatever Bruce Arena has been doing is working. He’s brought in a lot of pretty good veteran players. Players I’d assume are there because they won’t be too awed by the Spiced One and the media.
Tonights match there were three players which stood out to me. The two Donovans (Landon and Ricketts) and Eddie Lewis. All three had solid matches. That 4 wins in a row. 12 points out of 12. When was the last time LA did that? Heck, LA are well within the playoff zone. All this with only 70 minutes of Beckham on the pitch. See where I’m going here?
So, here’s the deal. Go ahead and gain all the media coverage you want Becks. Bottom line, this team is winning. Remember, tonight was only RBNY, the worst team in the league. Thankfully, that’s not use right now. Don’t fuck that up by being some primadona. (Boy, guess I’m reverting to the Open Letter I posted last night)
Anyway, as a long-time LA fan, I’ve forgotten what it’s like to have a winning streak like this…I suppose I should be enjoying it.
