Monday Ramblings
How many times have you heard some athlete say they love the game so much they would play for free? Yeah, it’s a tough one when you are already earning millions and when push comes to shove, I’m sure they’d continue to keep the money. But then I read about Oguchi Onyewu this morning. Gotta admit it’s a noble gesture. He spent the year in rehab and didn’t play. Milan hardly got their investment out of him so why not a free year? I’ve had fun reading the various blog comments on this, what everyone is missing is that “Gooch” has a 3-year contract. He is just finishing the first year of it. What he asked for was a third year which would be without pay. Fair enough. However, he’s now 28. he’ll be 30 when he enters the new final year of his contract. My bet is that he may well have been transferred by the time the 2012-2013 season so it’s all a bit of fancy publicity. Why not? It’s no where near as crazy as $250 for 5 years.
It seems Landon Donovan ruffled some feathers on the other side of the Atlantic with an innocent comment. If they wanna read more into it than there is, that’s there problem. Wayne Rooney has played a lot of games and he has been picking up some knocks which seem to send the island into hysterics each time.
Speaking of Landon, was it me or were LA just pedestrian on Saturday? Yeah, Landon had his moments, Edson Buddle had a few chances but on the whole, they really weren’t that effective against what I think is a poor Toronto team. My thought was that perhaps their heads were already on the flight to New Jersey and preparing for the World Cup.
Which leads to another topic. Landon is now gone for at least 4 matches. Unless he is injured, there’s no chance he’ll be seen in LA until the June 26th match in Toronto. I doubt he’ll fly straight there from South Africa but it’s possible, I guess. Unlikely he’ll play on 3 days rest though. So, we’ll next see Landon (and possibly Edson) on July 4th. Missing 5 games isn’t the end of the world I guess but it is 16.6% of the regular season. Can you imagine Man Utd going into a season knowing Wayne Rooney would be missing for 6 matches and Fergie couldn’t do a thing about it? But at least MLS has made some steps towards reducing the number of matches during the World Cup. Maybe in 4 years when we do it all again in Brazil, we’ll finally take a break in the season.
The fun is just heating up. Only the Champions League Final on Saturday (Fox, yes the broadcast channel, at 2:30PM) to get in the way of our World Cup buildup.
