The Package Lost its postage
I have no idea where to start this week. Rather than a main story on the island and one off as they show has usually done, last night was all over the place.
As Sun & Jin were kinda the main storyline, I guess I’ll start there. Mr. Paik in the alternate timeline, is not too keen on Sun’ providing him an heir from Jin’. How much do you wanna bet that LAX customs was tipped off about the cash?
In the ‘prime’ world, Paik’ is not at all keen on his daughter’s relationship so he arranges for them to be on the flight in order to have Jin’ killed by the hapless mercenary/hitman, Keamy. Cmon, the guy has botched every mission/assignment he’s had on the show. He was hired by Widmore to get Ben, Fail. He was hired by Paik to get Jin, Fail. Heck, something as simple as putting the squeeze on Sayid for some overdue loans due from Sayid’s brother ended in failure. His sole crowning achievement was killing Alex (and Rousseau and Karl) during the failed attempt to get Ben.
Hey, Mikhail’s back. This time he has two eyes, well, for a little while. I wonder if that one gunshot was enough to finish him off this time.
If Sun’ had a ton of money she wanted hidden in an account which no one knew about, why didn’t she choose an offshore bank where he father wouldn’t have much influence? Perhaps somewhere like, I don’t know, Switzerland? Nah, that would ruin the story.
In both time-lines, Jin was working for Paik. Sun wanted to run away to the New World (well, Ricardo wanted to as well) but in the new timeline, she wants to run away from her father. Previously, she was running away from Jin.
Huh, both Sun and Jin were smacked in the head in the same spot. Coincidence?
If Smokey Locke wanted Sun, why didn’t he take her when she was unconscious? He needs all the candidates in order to leave. It seems awful similar to Ben needing to round up all the Oceanic 6 survivors and Dead Locke in the coffin with Christian’s shoes to return. Right now all he has is Sayid and Sawyer. Hurley, Jack and Jin (and/or Sun) are not cooperating. He’s got his work cut out if he really is gonna fly that plane off the island. I wonder why Smokey isn’t too worried about recruiting Frank. Besides Jack’s couple of flying lessons (in a plane much smaller I’m guessing) I don’t know of any other pilots.
I need to go back and watch the episode again but, at what point was the story in LA when Sun lost her English? Did Smokey have something to do with this? Perhaps it has something to do with her the alternate her. Sun’ can’t speak English…she didn’t sleep with that other guy—well, I assume she didn’t as her secret affair is with Jin’.
Was anyone else a bit frustrated trying to follow her side of the dialog when she was passing notes in class to Jack? You’d think someone at ABC would have checked to see if anything important would be obscured with their “V” promotion. I chose to not watch “V” last night because of that. What else are ya gonna do?
Back to the discussion of candidates, Kate, it seems, has been removed from the list and is now expendable once Jack, Hurley & the Kwon join his team. Looks like we may get the Kate/Claire showdown we (well, I) had hoped for a couple weeks ago.
Are Miles and Frank on the show for any other reason than to provide comic relief? Hurley was off chasing Richard so when Miles (is that the same deck of cards he had in the Temple?) must have gotten tired of playing solitaire so he enlisted Frank to be his game buddy. Gotta admit, the best lines of the night were:
- Miles - “Unless Alpert’s covered in bacon grease, I don’t think Hugo can track anything.”
- Frank - “Hey! Don’t talk about bacon.”
- Homer-”Mmmmm… Reprocessed pig fat…”
For someone so hell-bent on leaving the island, Jack sure is calm now and doesn’t seem to have much real interest in leaving again.
I knew Sayid’ wasn’t a translator. He doesn’t trust anyone which is why he helped Jin, but only enough to insure he was still safe. Why am I convinced he’s not gonna be around much longer? I fear Sun is not gonna be around much longer either. Perhaps like Sun losing her English, Sayid’ is now a non-emotional killer or something. We know Juliet seemed to get a glimpse of her ‘other’ self ‘going Dutch right before she died.
Notice how Widmore didn’t tell Jin what he wanted from him? All he did was show him pictures of Ji-Yeon. I’m noticing this more. Last week we learned from Jacob that the reason for the Not-telling-people-what-to-do-and-just-trusting-they’ll-do-the-right-thing management philosophy. Thinking back on the entire series, there’s been a lot of both this and the This-is-what-I-need-you-to-do philosophy as well. I think back to the scene where Desmond (more on him in a few) wants to buy the ring from Mrs. Hawking and she does the, you-aren’t-supposed-to-buy-it/course correction skit. I’ll need to think this through some more.
Even when Widmore explained what would happen if “you know who” got off the island, his cryptic reply that everyone you know and love would cease to exist didn’t really tell much. Could this be more evidence that my theory about the other timeline being the ‘real’ timeline be true?
Was it just me, or did Ilana have an “I’m-in-awe-at-the-glorious-wonders-of-Jacob” grin when she saw Richard return to the beach? It really seems like some kinda worship relationship….or maybe it’s just me.
So, what was behind the locked door on the sub? It was our favorite skirt wearing (well, he is Scottish and he was in the Royal Scots who wear the Stewart Tartan on their kilts when they do the fancy dress thing…but I’m getting off topic) button-pusher who has returned to the island.
Ya gotta feel for Des, all he wants is to be with Penny (and little Charlie) and first he needs to prove himself to Widmore and ends up on the island pushing the button for 3 years. Thanks to Locke, he ends up running round the island naked; mentally jumping from one time period to another after he blows up (implodes) the Swan. He then spends all his waking moments keeping Charlie alive…well, for a while. He then, finally gets off the island, is rescued by Penny who (I assume) he then marries and has a wonderful life sailing the globe with his family living off the fortune Penny’s family have. Then, a memory is placed in his head which causes him to race back to the UK and then to LA to help those left on the island. As he is stocking the boat to head back to his idyllic life, Ben shoots him.
The last we saw of him, he was in a hospital in LA. While Des was in surgery, Penny was visited by her father’s former–errrr…not sure exactly what the relationship between Widmore & Hawking was—and told that her (Penny’s) half-brother started the events which led to Des getting shot.
We then see Hawking talking to Widmore and providing us some “who’s your daddy” info. I have no idea how long it has been since the Ajira flight landed on ‘Hydra Island’ but I’m guessing it’s only been about a week or so at most. That means, Des was probably taken, while in the hospital, loaded onto the sub and has been hanging out in the claustrophobic tube on some kinda happy juice while recovering from his gunshot wound. I don’t know, seems his life would have been a lot simpler had he just married Ruth. Personally, a 12-hour flight is about all I can handle without going crazy. How the heck can anyone spend any amount of time on a sub?
Of course, what’s the first thing Des sees when he leaves the sub? Sayid face poking out of the water. How long as it been since they saw each other? Probably three years. Off the top of my head, they last saw each other when Sayid and the gang were set adrift from Penny’s boat—Pre-Oceanic 6. Yeah, that would be a shocker to see him bobbing under the dock. Good thing Zoe (another seemingly incompetent Widmore hire) gave him too much ‘Happy Juice”.
Totally unrelated but, we have three docks it seems, the Pala Ferry dock, last seen after Desmond’s sailboat was hijacked by Ben’s gang, the Dharmaville dock, last seen when Sawyer threw the ring he’d planned to give Juliet into the ocean and the Hydra dock which is where Widmore docked his sub. Why do the other two seem to be suffering from neglect and the Hydra dock seems in good shape?
We saw Des briefly on the Oceanic flight–the one which landed in LA. I’ve read a lot of theories about him not really being on the flight. What if, he met Penny, Widmore approved of their union and they got married. He probably would have been sitting in First Class or something and if dude next to him was loud, I could see a stewardess telling him there were empty seats in coach he can go sit in for a while.
I guess we may get to find that out next week. Based on the fact that the preview for next week had some bagpipes (the most annoying sound in the world) playing, I’m sure the former dishonorably discharged member of the Royal Scots will be the focus.
I know I’m missing a couple of things, help me out here by posting some replies.

Sun and Jin are not married in the alternative timeline, and she’s pregnant - so no fertility problems between them. Now that she’s shot and her pregnancy is at risk, I’m thinking that Juliet is going to come back into the picture to ensure that Sun’s pregnancy goes full term.
Also, maybe they need Desmond to go something with the figures. Although he was TOLD to do something (type in the numbers), he continued to do it using his free-will. Perhaps rather than trying to keep things out of the island with the electromagnetic charge thingy, he was doing it to keep (Smokey - Evil) on the island?
