Across the Lost sea
Am I the only one disappointed by this weeks episode? Maybe I had my expectations too high or something. Or is it the tailspin, C.J. Cregg’s career seems to taken after President Bartlet finished his second term. However, it just didn’t seem to live up to expectations…well, my expectations.
Anyway, on to the show…
Was Claudia speaking Spanish? Mama was speaking Latin. Where did the English come in? Or did they so we wouldn’t have the read the entire show? Perhaps one of the island’s magical abilities is to instantly give everyone the ability to suddenly speak English….oh wait, that didn’t work for Jin….it took him a while.
“Every question I answer will only lead to another question” - Crazy Mama. Well, that may go a long way to explaining why nothing is ever explained on the show.
I wonder how long Crazy Mama was looking for children of her own? And then the island brought her a pregnant woman with twins.
I guess the OB/GYN doctors back in the ‘we-speak-latin’ days weren’t able to pick up the two heartbeats so she only had the one name, Jacob, read. Did his brother go through his entire life with no name? Smokey works for me though. Maybe his name is Tom Riddle.
What are the odds that this island will have at least 3 (that we know of) very pregnant women ending up on it?
So, the first baby comes out and is wrapped in white, Jacob. Smokey is the second born and wrapped in black.
Jacob is just laying there in white all calm and chilled out. Smokey, on the other hand, was crying and restless.
Oh, and then Crazy Mama made she sure had the babies by killing her.
Smoke Locke mentioned to Claire a few weeks ago that his mother was crazed (I assume Crazy Mama not Claudia) as well. Could Crazy Mama have lost her child? What was Rousseau’s true intention of taking Aaron from Claire? Why are so many in the show raised by someone other than their parent?
As a teen, Smokey the Kid finds an early type of backgammon game. He and Jacob play it but can’t tell Crazy Mama. Jacob can’t tell a lie so Crazy Mama finds out. She tells Smokey she left it for him, though she probably didn’t cuz she is trying to convince them there is no where else….their little part of the island is the entire world.
A quick ‘rules’ thought: Smokey make up the rules for the checkers/backgammon game. He said that Jacob could make up the rules for his own game. Is that the game we’ve been playing all this time?
Smokey asks her what ‘dead’ is. Crazy mama replies that it’s something he will never have to worry about.
They boys are then seen chasing one of the many boars on the island. Before they can get it, some men come along and get the boar before them. Crazy mama then gets questioned who they were and why they were on the island. Crazy mama doesn’t think it’s ‘time’ yet. She tries to deflect the questions the boys (mostly Smoke) throw at her. She tells us, “They come, the fight, they destroy, they corrupt and it always ends the same.” Where have we heard that before?
She also made it so the two of them can never hurt each other. Did she know then that they’d be on different teams?
So, they are outside some cave which a river is going in. Some bright light is inside it. A bright, warm light. They need to make sure no one ever finds it. Smokey thinks it’s beautiful. A little bit of this light is inside everyone….but they always want more. They can’t take it, but they will try. If they try, they can put it (the light?) out. If this light goes out, it goes out everywhere. That’s why it needs to be protected.
So, what the heck was Crazy Mama showing the kids? Love? Life? Hope? A bridge from LA to Hawaii? A Neil Diamond Song?
Jacob & Kid Smokey are playing Smokey’s game and talking about rules when their mom shows up. Why does only Smokey see her? Hurley connection?
Claudia takes him to the camp of the others which were actually the people Jacob and Smokey came with. She explains this to him and that Crazy Mama isn’t really their mother.
Oh, and while I’m thinking about it, I noticed early on the cave they are living in is the same one that Jack moved a bunch of (well, all that would listen to him) of the 815ers to in season one. However, the loom was long gone by then.
When Smokey learns Crazy Mama had been lying to them all this time, he decides it’s time to leave, but Jacob The Loyal isn’t going away where. Better the devil you know? But first he smacks Smokey a bit. Smokey decides then that he wants to leave the island and that they don’t belong on the island.
So what we get from all this is that Smokey has spent a couple thousand years trying to get off the island.
Crazy Mama explains that the reason she killed Claudia was to make sure Jacob and Smokey stay with her because the people are bad (must be the fighting, destroying & corrupting stuff) and she needed them to stay good.
Now, the others (Ben & the gang) always claimed to be the ‘good guys.’ Part of their charm was taking children. Children haven’t been corrupted yet so they are good. Ben was also a stickler for getting information on people. He would use it against them or to find out if they should be on Santa’s “Nice” List.
Why did she seem to favor Smokey for the big job?
Mystery solved. Crazy Mama taught Jacob how to weave those tapestries. I know everyone was dying to know that one.
So, for 30 years Smokey is hanging out with the bad people. Why? Cuz “they are a means to an end.” Even though they are greedy, selfish and manipulative, they are his way off the rock. Yet, for 2000 years he’s been attempting to get off the island by manipulating people for his own greedy, selfish needs.
Jacob is trusting like Locke was. He had lived on the island his whole life and just accepted what he was told. Smokey goes to live with the others and starts to discover things about the island. All sorts of things which Jacob really isn’t concerned about.
Smokey wants to leave, Jacob wants to stay. Jack wants to leave, Locke wants to stay…now Sawyer wants to leave and Jack wants to stay. Who knew The Clash wrote a song about the island?
Why is it so bad that Smokey leaves the island? Will he take some of the light with him?
Is the waterfall a bit like the lighthouse and only able to be found when it wants to be found? thirty years of searching on the island and it didn’t turn up? Dharma did some searching of their own and didn’t find it. Could the ‘temple’ have been built over it? At least now we know a bit more about how the tunnels where built….and the frozen donkey wheel.
So, Smokey’s ’specialness’ allowed him to dream up the idea of harnessing the light and the water to get him off the island. Some place in Tunisia? Wasn’t Walt special too?
Smokey has to do all that because he doesn’t belong here. How many times have we heard someone told they don’t belong somewhere? (something to look for when I re-watch everything I guess)
We know Smokey was on to something with his theory cuz Crazy Mama decided to knock him out and fill in the hole. Just how did it get filled? How did the rest of the early Dharma crew get wiped out?
So now it’s time to pass the Protector Badge to Jacob. Down there is “Life, Death, Rebirth, the source, the heart of the island.” Now, if it were me, I think I’d ask a few follow up questions before accepting the position. What kinda answer is that?
Going down there, to visit the light, would be much worse that dieing. Jacob then asks his questions before drinking the Kool-aid. However, he wastes his questions on his mommy issues. I guess Smokey is no longer a candidate.
Crazy Mama must have known Smokey was coming to get her. Is it me or is there a relationship between rain & death on the island? Why did Crazy Mama thank Smokey? What did Smokey wanna say to Jacob before reconstructing his brother’s face? Jacob wasn’t going to kill Smokey (cuz he couldn’t) but….did he have to leave his body before turning into the smoke? I guess that explains why he takes the different forms cuz he doesn’t have a true one of his own or something like that.
So, Adam & Eve weren’t really an Adam & Eve really. More like a not really mother & son. With all the people who have been on the island over the next 2000 years, how is it that one found their bodies before Jack?
Now, didn’t Jack (or was it Locke) say that based on the decomposition of their cloths and stuff that the skeletal remains of Adam & Eve were 30-40 years old? Guess that’s why neither were archeologists.
Is protecting the island a bit like pushing the button? Your told it’s important so you do it but you never really understand why.
Ah, how could we have the end without The End? (music during the preview for next week)
