Stop telling me what to think

I’m sorry, I’ve put up with this for years. However, this soccer related elitism our friends from Britain (or who want to be from Britain) want to impose on us “Yanks” has got to stop.
I know it’s probably difficult to believe but there were fans of the sport in this country long before the 1994 World Cup. Long before MLS was created. I can’t go back to the NASL, though I’m sure there are plenty who can, but I wasn’t around for it. Granted, most who followed soccer in ...

How much is enough?

Kartik had a pretty scary post on his blog last night. The basic statement in the post was that EPL broadcasts on ESPN the last couple of weeks have basically blown away anything MLS is doing. Worse, MLS ratings in 1996 were better than they are now…bad news potentially.
Of course there’s always a different way of looking at things—not that I’m going to paint a better picture of things.
Why don’t we start with this opinion from Kartik.
MLS should have higher TV ratings than the EPL or La Liga. Only the ...

What goes up…

Ordinarily I won’t go near the topic of some type of promotion/relegation system in MLS. To be honest, I don’t think it’s needed. What will it really bring? For some reason there’s a romanticized notion that MLS will be better if the bottom club(s) were to drop to a lower level and the top teams from that level would replace them. Yeah, it’ll give those teams towards the bottom something extra to fight for but…well; RBNY would probably be already making plans for the lower level next season.
Anyway, what sparked ...

Calm down US Soccer fans

I don’t know if it’s just soccer fans or Americans in general these days but, well, these knee jerk hysterics depending on the latest result has got to end. Sorry but, yeah losing at the Azteca was a disappointment. But ya know what? We’ve never won there. Not once.
Yeah, we did manage a 0-0 draw qualifying for the 1998 World Cup and, over looked by the media at large, Mexico was held 0-0 in the semi’s of the Confederations Cup at the Azteca in 1999. ...

Is TV starting to like Soccer?

Like most other soccer fans in this country, there’s really only one thing on my mind today—the match at the Azteca this afternoon. I decided to watch ESPN last night just to see if there was anything and, as I figured it would be ignored, I could get my mind off the match and probably be put to sleep by endless Baseball and NFL training camp news. (I didn’t expect Rick Pitino to be the main event)
The end result, while I didn’t expect much, there actually was some ...

Thank You Sir Bobby

My eyes started to water the second I read about the passing of Sir Bobby Robson this morning. Yeah, I got to shake his hand once when he was handing out medals and awards at a tournament I played in. Not sure if he actually saw me play. However, even without that moment, I'm sure I would have reacted the same way.

Games Without Frontiers

Enough with the negative stuff I’ve been posting lately. I not sure why but I was reminded the other day about this show I watched as a kid in England called, “It’s a Knockout”…it’s the Euro counterpart (later rounds) “Jeux Sans Frontieres”. And if you thought it had anything to do with Peter Gabriel, well, the TV show was the inspiration behind the song.
Anyway, here’s the idea of the show. You get towns to compete against each other in a series of competitions. However, rather than your usual team sports, ...

Happy Ending in TV for US at Azteca debate

Don’t you love a happy ending? Here we were (well, I was) all worked up about potentially not being able to watch the US play their World Cup Qualifier at the Azteca. I’d even called DirecTV to see what it would cost to get one (or both) of the channels just for the day–actually, I still haven’t heard back yet on my last email. Oh well.
Anyway, in case you can and haven’t heard yet, Telemundo and mun2 are being offered to all providers for free than day. Why not? ...

The sky isn’t falling US Soccer fans

Don’t get me wrong, losing yesterday to Mexico in the final of the Gold Cup hurt. We should not ever lose a match that bad to anyone…especially not to our neighbors.
However, while the scoreboard read 5-0, it really wasn’t that much of a blowout. First, the US were probably the better team in the first half. Watching it I kept thinking we were gonna score eventually. It just seemed inevitable someone would find the net.
However, a soft penalty call changed all that. The young midfield we had out there ...
